This picture was taken in the Mara Masai camp ground called Kichwa Tembo. The Masai actually own the land that the camp is on and lease it to the company that runs the safari. The campground is enclosed with metal fencing to keep the animals out. Neverhteless, there are monkeys and warthogs living within the campground.
The Masai that lease the land appeared to be very fortunate. The male Masai hung out at the camp. I'd see them early in the morning when I got up, and throughout the day. It was nice because I could talk to them anytime. The female Masai were not in the camp and from what I gathered they women and children spent the day watching the livestock. The Masai also had cell phones. I asked one Masai who he called and he said he calls his wife to see how the cows are doing.
The Masai werre intrigued by the fact that I was a black american. They would always ask, "Where are you from?" Once when I said the US the Masia responded, "You are a BLACK American!" With a very heavy emphasis on the word "black." It was hilarious! The Masai all spoke English as well as Swahili.
The Masai put on this dance for the guests and many people, including my mom, were plucked from the crowd to particiapte.
